Gietz et al place the first version of the text 'only between the 4th-century CE' and the 11th-century. Leadbeater states that the text is likely from about 900 CE, given that it includes chapters on and techniques that likely developed later. Other scholars suggest that the earliest core of the text may be from the first centuries of the common era, and additional chapters were added thereafter through the 6th-century or later.
